Leading House Africa Grant Update

CCAR-Blogpost

Over the past year and a half, much has been achieved by the Competence Center for African Research (CCAR) and the Institute for Business Ethics (IWE) in their activities on the African continent.

Catherine McDonald, a PhD student at IWE, was awarded a Leading House Africa grant in November 2023 to support her research in Ethiopia. Her project examines how multinational companies operate in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). Together with Dr. Kebene Wodajo, she gave a public lecture at Addis Ababa University on responsible AI.

The grant also enabled her to participate in the Young Entrepreneurship Exchange Project (YEEP), which further strengthens the relationship between CCAR and IWE. In May 2024, Catherine returned to Addis Ababa to continue her PhD research and to give a guest lecture.

An important milestone was also the 5th anniversary conference of the Ethics Lab in Cameroon in June 2024, organized by Dr. Thierry Ngosso. Catherine moderated a panel on business and human rights. The IWE and CCAR plan to expand their research and collaboration with various institutions in Africa in 2025.
